What does a prisoner in solitary confinement do to p his time?

Unless the prison systems have changed since I read up on this in college- they sit there for 23 hours out of the day staring at the walls of their cell. No phone time, no mail, nothing to read, no TV. The other hour is for eating, showers and if lucky 30 minutes alone in the exercise yard.
