I've seen plenty of examples of supernatural beliefs harming people (psychic healers) and stopping progress (the geocentric solar system), so I'd like to hear some examples of how the supernatural aids people and civilization. Can you describe a "worst case" scenario of what would happen if we eliminated supernatural thinking? Would people die, and progress come to a screeching halt as a result? Chances of getting into Ivy League, i.e. Princeton?

Currently high school freshman, starting fourth semester (So not too much info yet). So far I've gotten all A's except for a B+ in gym ( I know... forgot to do a worksheet). I have a 4.56 weighted GPA (not really high i know, but hoping to get at least 4.7 by junior year), ranked 11 out of 251 (Not fabulous either). I got a varsity letter for swimming this year, but regretfully didn't join any clubs, although I'm planning to next year (and hopefully a lot of them). I pretty sure about NHS later on, and i took the SATs in 8th grade with a 1780 (obviously taking it again). I am going to take the AP Chinese test next week...and hoping for a 5. In the future I will take as many AP cles as I can (hopefully at least 8) and I plan on joining track next year. I am a very good writer, better than math. Then again, I haven't learned much math, and writing is more natural for me. However, I hope to improve a lot on math. I play the violin, I'm first generation Asian- American (does that have affect? i think so...) Looking back, there really isn't anything remarkable...but what are the chances of me getting into an Ivy League or top school, if I really pick up with the extracurriculars and the grades. If not Princeton, then maybe Brown, Dartmouth, UChicago, Carnegie Mellon, UCLA, or Northwestern? I'm very intelligent, but a bit lazy. Suggestions please?

Hard candy easter eggs?

There has been several questions about the hard candy easter eggs that have icing sugar, egg whites, gelatin, glucose and colour in the recipe, but none of them have given the right recipie or the amounts. I'd recommend a 357 revolver. Shoot as many 38 specials through it in practice as you can afford. The 357 is very simple in a double action revolver. Maintenence is very straight forward. You can shoot 38's in it for a low recoil, cheap practice round. Full blown 357's are as much power as you would ever need for what you're wanting a handgun for. My stepson is 7, & today he brought home some homework that consisted of him seeing how much his spelling words were "worth" He has 20 words,each word five to six letters, and if a=1, b=2, etc. , he had to add up all the letters & come out with the answer. He could not grasp the idea, even after I made hima chart of the letters & what number they correspond to. It took us an HOUR to get this done. He has homework every other day, this week also including putting all the words in ABC order, and writing 20 sentances including each word. My 5 yr old is the same way. Once a week, he brings home a picture and has to write a short essay about it, being at least 4 sentances. They both already have a negative view of school, even though both are very smart. It just really frustrates me that they get only 20 min. of free play at school, the rest involves sitting down and doing work, plus they are expected to do homework. Anyone else see this as being a bit excessive for such small children?

Painfully Odd Migraines?

Hello, well i've been getting migraines like horribly. They start out as a spot on my head about one inch in diameter, that spot gets really cold, almost like when you have to get something surgically "frozen" off. Then it will stay cold for about 45 seconds to 3 minutes, and then a shooting pain. In less words, almost like someone is sticking there finger through my skull and twisting their fingers. I know, i know thats a horrible way to describe it, but this is the way i feel. Then I'll get dizzy. Any ideas on what this could be or how to help?

Why will my xbox360 wont read some games or dvds?

i have an xbox thats out of warranty, which i bought off crap bay, it is my childs who plays it all the time, but lately it has stopped reading some games and dvds, at one point it would not read them at all and the 'open tray' error kept showing. i looked up some guides on cleaning the lense etc so went about taking it apart to find i hadnt the right torx bit, so i put it back together and somehow it worked ok but then stopped again, i got the right bits and got into the lens and cleaned it carefully with cotton buds, i also had to hoover out a tonne of dust that was inside the casing. so ok i put it together again and still it wouldnt read the discs then later it would and then it wouldnt, last night i watched a dvd on it, today it wouldnt load anything and now atm my son is playing halo 3 after about 15 attempts of reloading it and it displaying scratched disc mid game. i have just tried COD 44 which is just opened out of the box but i got the open tray error again, i reloaded halo and as he is now playing it that tells me the laser/lens is still working obviously, but why is it so hit and miss? also ive read about the heat receptors that can play up if they get too hot but i have a cooling system. i almost threw the console in the bin the other nite with the intentions of buying another as i thought it was totally wrecked but as its not , what is the problem or what can i do to fix this constant hit and miss disc reading dabacle?

Trouble with in-laws staying at our house?

My in-laws live interstate. They chose to move away from our city as their two sons were not married and she wanted to be with her sisters. They visit twice a year and stay for weeks. Both my husband and his brother have small houses and although they think they are not getting in the way in my house there is stuff everywhere that I step over, the bathroom is dirty and I have to be polite and talk to them from morning till night. She washes up and tidies but it is just the general having guests in my face. It makes me not sleep and is very tiring. I am a person that likes my solitude and routine and for years have put up with having them stay, although each year I say less time that they can and it is now down to 3 nights only. I feel guilty and have told my husband that he must cater to them and if he wants to see them more to visit them at his brothers. This causes tension between us. I am dealing with an illness and I told my husband if he wants them to stay he had to do everything and I needed my space. They knew that I had the illness yet they still stayed and hung around putting pressure on me to organise things and go places as my husband didn't. They have left now, and I am drained and fighting with my husband. It is not fair. We did discuss that they stay in a hotel or move back to the city but they say they cannot afford it and only want to live in a house. Now they tell me they are going to give my husbands brother $40 per week so that my niece can go to preschool as his wife thinks that the fees are too expensive, but my brother in law spends all his money on top quality cameras and household goods which they know about as well. Why can't they save and spend the money on a hotel for a few weeks and then I can enjoy their visit more? I feel really trapped between my husband and his family and it is getting me down. My husband doesn't understand. Visiting them is a big trip and we run a home business and holidays are a rare thing. Help!

Why do people not obey the speed limit?

I was driving in a different state last week. The drive to the client's place of business was about 30 miles. Throughout the drive there was various zones where the speed limit was 55, 65 and 70. Some of the 55 zones were construction. Anyway, I was in a rental vehicle and noticed that while in the 55 zone, I was going 70. I thought I was going too slow because every single car ped me very quickly. They had to be going 25 mph over the speed limit. 55, 65, 70...didn't matter most non-truckers were going 80 plus. Why do people not obey the limits? I understand going a few mph over but 25 mph over??? That's not right.

How hard is it to get into the amateur MMA scene in Southern California at age 18?

You may have to to get a license in Cali, not sure. Probably a good idea to do a NAGA tournament or two to build qualifications. The amateur fights are usually three, 3 minute rounds. There are a couple amateur promotions in Vegas. You'd definately want to have solid kickboxing skills before you go for it.

For me it was a clmate in the 5th grade. I was curling parts of my hair with a pencil because I just found out that pencils could do that and liked the way the curls were so small. Then this kid was like,"Why are you curling your hair, you're not pretty." My mother was in the hospital near her death from alzheimer's. Three days before she died someone removed her wedding band. Why do people think college is so great?

because everyone around me thinks college is important, and I dont see the point, I know what I want to do in life and it has nothing to do with learning academic bull**** all day. It locks you in, forces you to stay in one little spot while you take all those cles on one little subject then be a good little boy and take a job, that locks you in to that one place forever. I study and study but apparently 74% is not good enough for my history cl, the professor has a propietary grading policy where you must get 21 on each test. Not a point lower. I have a 20, and I tried to retest but the testing center said I can't because I don't have a yellow slip and well.. you need a yellow slip "thats the rule". So now I fail probably. Government burahracies are so great, nothing like a bunch of people sitting in a testing room doing nothing getting paid tons to do a job Wal-mart would pay someone $5 for.

She then suggested I take Fortamet twice a day and an insulin shot every morning. But did not take back the information. So the customers went else where and used our information to get the job done. You need to drink more water. Pain killers also can constipate you and this can lead to gaining weight because your bowels are not functioning properly. Ideally you should go to the bathroom after every meal. A good colon cleanse may help. Go to your local health food store for more information. For me strong pain killers lead to a weight loss. I really didn't feel like eating. So I guess everyone is different. This brings me back to drinking more water. Distilled is the best for flushing your body of the toxins that build up from the medication. I hope you find something to help you continue to loose or at least maintain. Congratulations on loosing the 50 lbs. That is a great accomplishment. You should be very proud of yourself.

Well OK if there is no way you can tell your family the only thing you can do when you are around them is to be the way they want you be. I would find this very difficult if it were me as honesty is the best policy even in the strictest of families. They should love you no matter what your ual orientation was. It is hard for all families to accept at first but gosh you are all family and somewhere down the road they will get used to it and if your sister has already suspected it will only be a matter of time before the rest do to. While I see the point you were trying to make, you didn't do a good job of it. The fact of the matter is, no one wants to say individuals committed atrocities and not religion. Religion is inanimate; it is a set of ideas and beliefs. Ideas don't kill, bring ignorance, or create wars. People do. Apparently no one knows how to exercise logic and place the blame on the person and not the idea. Neither religion nor politics has created wars, killed people, or brought ignorance. PEOPLE did this, and it just so happens that these individuals claimed a particular religion (or were involved in a certain section of politics)...and chances are their actions were completely contradictory to the behavior that the religion promoted. But no one wants to put the blame where it really belongs. Ignorance continues to reign over everyone as long as we continue to generalize and misplace blame and responsibility.

I actually like using Noxzema's moisturizer. I've been using this product for several years along with Noxzema face pads. This moisturizer keeps my face really soft and I never get break outs unless it's that time of the month, and even then it's like one or two pimples and there completely gone 2-3 days. It also helps to drink lots of water and to stay away from caffeine.

I work in retail and all day long I have people that come in and just absolutely reek! It is disgusting. We have been married 20 years - have 3 kids, ages 18,14,12. My wife comes from a very ually repressed Asian culture. I suggested marriage counseling but her response was "I can't talk to you about my issues with intimacy, why would you think I could talk to a stranger about it?" But as time goes by I find myself getting more and more resentful about her lack of pion. As my resentment builds we drift farther and farther apart. I am really really depressed about the situation. I have talked to her about this over and over but it never gets any better. I decided once to just not initiate any or affection and see how long it took for her to come to ME. Three months went by and we became basically just roommates. Eventually I went back to the same old pattern of always being the pionate one. But this is really hurting my self image. I just am really frustrated. Got any advice?

I know she likes you. She's just a little shy about saying it or talking about. She's not shy about flirting with you, but when it comes down to crunch time, she still has the erflies. Stuck In A Hopeless Job Until I'm Fired?

Same boat. I finally did get myself fired and still (7 months later) haven't landed any kind of job i can live with, much less like. I am in school though, paid for partially by the state. Get your *** back in school, take one cl if that's all you can afford, but stay in school. If you don't go you'll definitely never finish. A big part of school is being able to network with other people who may share your interests. Look into financial aid, cut your expenses, look into self-study / testing out of some cles through CLEP. In any case, don't lose the job you got without one to go to; its rough out there. Good luck to us both.

Aquarium Help?!?

We recently got a 75 gallon tank that came with fish. We also have our own, but are trying to find new homes for many of them due to fear of over population. We have done a complete water change obviously when we first got the tank, and at least 3 partial water changes since. I test the water often, and have put in things to lower ph, ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, and produce bacteria for the filter. I'm pretty sure the filter is not completely cycled yet, as there is still a small odor from the tank. I've increased oxygen flow, reduced feeding and regulated temperature. My question is: why are my bottom feeders still having rapid gill movement, and some fish hug the top of the tank as if gasping for breath? I know these are signs ociated with nitrate poisoning, but I watch the levels and can only use so many chemicals before I wonder why they aren't working. Is it just that my filter has to finish cycling? Or is there something else I could do to aide to my fish?? I want them happy!

Fellow Atheists I Need Your Help?

Okay so I have recently converted to atheism and today I some texts from my cousin about my beliefs. No one in my family likes my decision and very often when I am with my cousins we start arguing mainly because they bring it up. So then my cousin told me that she is going to bring our entire family over to my house(btw I'm 16) and have me explain myself to them. Do you think this is right? I already explained myself to my parents and defeated them in a debate. I have a lot of relatives so there are going to be like 12 people coming over and I think they are just going to badger on and on about miracles and the bible and the so called god loving everyone and how I am wrong and they are right. Note that my cousins say that our souls feel pain and that's why we are able to feel in heaven. My mom wants me to read this book of a saints life that preformed so called miracles. I am just so confused I do not know what to do. Not sure if this helps or not, but did you know that muscle weighs more than fat, so you may be losing fat, but putting on muscle with your workout. That means you wouldn't lose weight. Try doing measurements instead of weighing yourself. If your flabby bits reduce in size, then you are losing fat.

I think they go too far although some so called celebs actually invite it when it suits them (Jordan, Katona and the like) They cannot have it both ways - invite intrusion when it suits them but complain when it does not. The problem is that a lot of the public seem obsessed about reading articles concerning celebs or watching so called reality shows. Gossip and half truths sell newspapers and magazines and until people show less interest in them then the paparazzi will continue to flourish. If you want the fame you have to accept the scrutiny unfortunately.
